The Journey - part 3

29 of August

What happened when I got to Miami? Well, after one hour going through visas and passport check and baggage claiming I got to run to the terminal and wait. But what happens when after another hour, they change your gate to the opposite corner of the airport? You get to run. Again. And wait two more hours due to the bad weather and broken pieces in the airplane (sounds safe, I know).

And finally we get to take off !

The Journey - part 2

29 of August

The first flight

Not the first time flying, just the first flight from Madrid to Miami. Almost 9 hours in a plain. Luckily it was almost empty so I got to sleep in two seats, saw about 3 movies, ate delicious food and enjoyed the view:)

The Journey - part 1

29 of August

The most exhausting day of all time! Waking up at 2am, to leave from Elvas to Madrid. After 4 hours journey, the waiting (for what seemed to be forever) for the check in to opened.

When it finally does, they get to tell me that I needed another visa that I didn't had, the USA Visa. Just great. Luckly there was a travel agency there that could fix me the visa in the last minute and saved me from loosing the flight. Ok, so Everything checked, got in the train (yes Madrid airport is just huge!) went to the gate and waited till was time to fly :)

Portugal Preparations

There was a lot to be done before leaving and the time to do it, didn't help. But so far so good!
After my interview with the School board, I started preparing all the documents and all the bureaucracy needed to travel to Dominican Republic. I know, very optimistic of me, Since I still hadn't the answer from them! But I had the feeling that the interview went stupendously well and that the position was mine so, why wait? I started by renew my ID, my passport, asked for a birth certificate, criminal record and medical certificate.  All documents that I needed to present at the embassy to ask for a visa. After a week the Consul lady already called me by Maria! You can imagine how many times i called there! When I got my answer I bought my plain tickets and my insurance and took care of the final documents. I'm still waiting for the visa response so lets pray the answer is Yes since I already bought everything else!

And so it begins

And so it begins. In one minute, you are opening an e-mail from your university saying " Do you want to teach abroad?", and in the next one, you are.
That's how fast, thrilling and exciting my AIESEC experience began.
I applied in one morning (aiesec.pt) and by night they had called me and explained me which programs they had and how it all worked. I got super excited and immediately started to search about stories from different people and their feedback from these internships. As i kept reading their experiences and life changes and the culture shock they went trough, I soon realized that that's exactly what i needed in my life right now. I'm a recently formed Biology/Geology teacher who's working on a little stand selling cellphone's cases. Some may say "Living the dream"? But, not really. Here in Portugal the "Teaching Job" isn't going trough a good phase right now, and there  are thousands of more qualified teachers applying for the same positions as me. So my teaching career doesn't present many prospects in a recent future. Also, and not less important, I "recently" had my heart broken in a way I never thought could be possible. And I think that just the thought, and the dreaming of going away and be part of something that big, made me forget about it a little. Gave me something to focus on, to work for, to live for. And for that, I'm deeply grateful.
After that, I did my English exam, I did my AIESEC interview (which was horrible! Thank you Beatriz for that!) and took part on an Preparation Seminar that guided us and explained well... everything! I have to say here that without Federica to inspire me, things would probably be a lot different.
Moving on. After investigating a while, I got my heart settle in Colombia and in Latin American Culture so, that's where Helena (my AIESEC mentor/guide counselor) and I focused on. We applied for lot's of internships and I even got answered by a few. The problem was that I was searching for an opportunity with one year duration, and most of them were only for 6 months. Since I was investing so much in this amazing journey, I decided that I would only go if I could be there as longer and enjoying it as much as I could. So, we kept applying and we kept waiting for that special one to came along. And one day it did. I applied for an internship teaching English in Dominican Republic and their AIESEC president answered me and presented me with the opportunity to teach Sciences there. That was the beginning of this Story that I'm about to tell, each day, for the next 10 months.
